DNA Tests can be conducted in many different scenarios. Some people opt to conduct DNA tests at home, and some prefer to have a skilled lab technician to conduct the test.

The selection of the test is a personal decision and at times depends on the location of individuals and reason for the test. It is most challenging when individuals are in different geographic locations or are in different countries. However, the science of DNA has become very sophisticated, which makes the testing possible no matter where individuals are based.

The most common DNA test procedure is to use a saliva sample. The test is conducted by using a swab to sample the tissues of the donor’s cheek. The analysis of the cheek swab is then put through a scientific procedure to determine the genetic markers of the individual. Those genetic markers determine relationships between individuals who are tested.

Test results can vary between 3 – 4 business days to 1 week or more depending on the complexity of the test, location of individuals and when the samples arrive at the laboratory.

Home based kits vs. lab-based tests

Home based kits can be used to conduct a DNA test and provide peace of mind. SmarTest labs can provide you with a kit and train you in how to conduct the test. Pharmacies can provide you with kits or kits can be sent to your home if ordered online. However, all samples must be sent to a lab for testing and for verification of the results.

With that said there is always room for error in the testing procedure. DNA tests are highly sensitive and results can impact personal relationships and families. For that reason, it is highly recommended that the tests be conducted by a laboratory technician who is trained and certified as AABB certified to conduct the test. SmarTest Labs is a lab that is AABB certified to conduct any DNA test.

Lab based tests are required if the parties involved require legal outcomes of the results. Home based kits and tests conducted at home cannot be used for legal purposes like child custody, forensic tests, immigration, birth certificate name changes, paternity and maternity results and many other DNA tests required by the court system. For these an AABB certified laboratory is required to conduct the test.

Steps for home-based DNA test.

If you plan on an at home test here are some of the steps to keep in mind:

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything for an hour before the test.
  • From the kit use the swab provided to gently brush the cheek on each side to provide the tissues from the cheek. Avoid as far as possible saliva from the cheek. Do this motion for 20 – 30 seconds on both sides of the cheek.
  • Please the cheek swab in the paper envelope provided. Do not touch the tip of the swab that was used in the test procedure. Mark the envelope with the name and ID of the individual whose sample is in the envelope.
  • Repeat this procedure for each person if there is more than one person. Do not mix the samples.
  • The samples should then be sent to the lab that will be processing the outcome of the samples. If it is being mailed, place the sample in appropriate mailing envelopes and send it to the laboratory. The best case is to send the samples as soon as possible although this is not needed if it is difficult.

Please note that an at home test still requires the processing time for results. Many home-based tests do not give quick turnaround results. It will take the same time to process the results as listed in this blog.

Although Home based kits range in price between $150 – $200, the need for DNA accuracy is not guaranteed in a home-based collection. Court systems do not accept home based tests due to proper chain of custody controls in the collection process.
